Conversion Tags: Barcode to RFID

Problem

A healthcare equipment manufacturer needed to convert barcode-labeled inventory to RFID while relocating to a new facility. They required a fast, accurate solution that would not disrupt operations during the move.

Solution

EMP developed a custom Zebra printer application that enabled users to scan an existing barcode and instantly print and encode an RFID label on a Zebra ZT231R. This simple workflow provided a seamless transition from barcode tracking to RFID-enabled operations.

Story

Facility relocations are challenging enough without introducing new tracking technologies at the same time. Rather than forcing the customer to adapt to a standard solution, EMP developed a custom application that fit seamlessly into their existing workflow. As inventory was prepared for the move, operators scanned each existing barcode label and printed a new RFID label using a Zebra ZT231R printer, allowing boxes and pallets to be converted from barcode to RFID during the relocation process. When operations go live in the new facility, Zebra TC22R handheld readers will enable employees to quickly and accurately locate inventory. By combining RFID expertise, software development, and practical implementation experience, EMP delivered a solution that minimized disruption, simplified the transition, and positioned the customer for greater visibility and efficiency. This project highlights EMP’s ability to solve unique challenges through customization, technical proficiency, and a deep understanding of real-world operations.
