We used this phrase the last time we talked about using our own technology in our operations. It is gross and conjures up your gag reflex, so of course we wanted to use it again! This time it is in reference to using RFID to track our in-house service parts.
We have a few vendors who have RFID tracking software and we wanted to really wring the product out before recommending it to customers. First hurdle these vendors had was being willing to spin up a test instance for us to use in house. Then we had to find a part of our business that we could use for test purposes. Service parts was an immediate choice.
There are a lot of reasons why service parts was such an obvious choice. First, they are high dollar items making the cost of tagging easy to absorb. Second, they are quick turn items that are difficult to track because of their velocity. Third, they are in corrugated boxes making them easy to tag and very readable.
So now, the fun part, walking down the aisle with a handheld RFID reader taking inventory of the parts within a few minutes. Also, doing so daily instead of every month or so. You know, the dream of RFID. Immediate, easy, frequent inventory counting using RFID technology. Eating our own Dog Food.
This is also a way for us to have our own inhouse demo for customers. Using the hardware, software and integration services that we provide on our own inventory.
