SOTI has always been able to provide tracking of Mobile Computers with cellular capabilities using MobiControl. Tracking these same devices indoors using Wi-Fi has been more challenging. Challenging because of the various wireless networks on the market, and the different ways that each tracks the location of devices accessing Wi-Fi.
But things are changing in the way that tracking devices indoors is done using SOTI. First, you will now need to have SOTI XSight on top of MobiControl. The list of wireless access point providers that are supported is growing rapidly. For now, Cisco, Juniper and Extreme products are supported with several more manufacturers’ products coming this year. And the tools for you to use in tracking your mobile computing devices are now better than ever.
This is a good starting group of wireless providers since Cisco is a large percentage of the indoor wireless network market with 47% market share. Also good since Extreme is the wireless networking product that EMP has sold for many years now. Extreme purchased the legacy Symbol/Motorola/Zebra wireless technology in 2016, and this technology is excellent at keeping mobile devices moving at high speeds, indoors connected to the network.
Also excellent is EMP’s ability to help you use these incredible tools to track your wireless mobile computers real time, indoors and out. We have invested in training, acquiring the tools needed to implement this technology in our own building. That means that we can show you how it works, and help you get it installed on your side.
There are several steps needed to get indoor location working, including a link to your current Wi-Fi provider, the use of the location service, importing or creating facility maps, the training on how to use this new location engine in your SOTI instance.
Once this is complete, your ability to track your valuable mobile devices to prevent loss is improved substantially. Many times, we go to help a customer with a hardware refresh, and after 3 or 4 years of use the customer is shocked by how many devices have escaped their facilities over those years.
