Zebra Android

In October of 2011, Motorola (now part of Zebra) introduced the ET1 tablet. This was the first stab at putting Android on a mobile computer by Motorola. This was being done because Window Mobile and CE were going end of life, and end of support, so a new OS was needed for rugged mobile computing.

The only real game in town was Android and Google. And Google was making it attractive for our industry to use Android by creating an Open-Source product, allowing companies to create a custom build of the OS and to enhance it to their use case.

And enhance Android Zebra did. Now with around 50 applications developed to make rugged mobile computers super usable, secure and easy to use. Applications to enable data input by barcode scanners, OCR, and RFID readers. Enterprise home screen to lock out only the desired applications.  Enterprise Browser to also lock out all but the desired web sites. Stage now to enable single barcode scanning to configure the device. Enterprise keyboard to allow the creation of custom keyboards on the device and control what keyboard appears on the screen, and when.

The list goes on and on.
