Custom Pick to Light Cart

Challenge

Create a custom pick-to-light cart that addresses all of the customer’s needs.

Solution

A custom shelving unit with waterfall shelves, an Epson color printer on a printer slide, a Zebra DS9908 scanner, a pull-out shelf, and lithium-ion batteries.

Story

Custom mobile pick-to-light cart with waterfall shelves, Epson color printer, and laptop

A healthcare company needed to improve its warehouse picking. No off-the-shelf product solved the problem, so they turned to the engineers at EMP, who they had worked with many times before. The customer’s existing picking station was stationary, and they wanted a mobile station that could be used at both their US and European facilities. Products existed on the market, but none had all of the desired components, so EMP worked closely with the customer to design and build the entire cart.

The shelves were designed in a waterfall shape to allow more stacking on each shelf, with pick-to-light technology installed. A pull-out shelf on the second level gives the operator more surface area during picking. Power was essential: rather than a heavy lead-acid battery that needs recharging, EMP installed two lithium-ion batteries that can be hot-swapped so the cart runs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The customer also needed to print color labels directly from the cart, so an Epson C3500 color printer was mounted on a pull-out shelf for easy access. Finally, a Zebra DS9908 was chosen as the handheld scanner so operators can use the trigger or set it in presentation mode to read any barcode placed in front of it.

The engineers at EMP used their engineering skills and wide product knowledge to build a custom product that was perfect for the customer. Looking for a custom solution? Contact the engineers at EMP today.
