This article assumes that MacGyver is enough of a lexicon in our language that almost everyone understands the reference. But just in case, MacGyver was a TV show that ran from 1985 through 1992. In the show, the main character would get his way out of a jam in every episode by coming up with all kinds of clever inventions to fix the problem.

Inventions using everyday items to create a clever fix for a problem. Nonsensical sometimes, like using a 9-volt battery to arc weld something. Putting a watch crystal in a rolled-up newspaper to make a telescope. Using a paperclip to disable a missile. But you get the idea, clever solutions.
Recently, one of the Zebra sales reps that we work with frequently, referred to EMP as the MacGyver of our industry. We immediately wore the analogy as a badge of honor. An honor because we frequently find simple, clever solutions to our customers’ business problems. Not using chewing gum and rubber bands but using common sense and some backroom engineering to create low-cost solutions to our customers’ problems.
The old saying is that if your only tool is a hammer, every problem looks like a nail. And more to the point many in our industry try to hit everything with a sledgehammer, when all that was needed was a screwdriver.
