Challenge
Design an all-encompassing parts tracking system for an automotive aftermarket facility.
Solution
Zebra ZT411 printers, Zebra DS3608-ER and DS3678-ER scanners, and a custom web browser application.
Story

EMP had already implemented a very successful inventory management system for this customer’s automotive bumper facility. This time, the customer purchased a new facility for all of its aftermarket components and wanted the inventory tracking system across the entire shop floor. They knew EMP had the team to get the job done right.
As each component is received, its barcode is scanned and a new part label is created to track the piece throughout the facility. EMP designed a web browser application to follow those parts, so the manufacturer knows where every single component is at any given time. To keep production moving, a dwell time is set for each scanned component. If a part exceeds its dwell time anywhere on the shop floor, that area turns red on the floor map. The map also highlights high-priority parts in yellow, chosen by an algorithm, so they can be moved through first.
When a part is scanned into a new station, a preloaded video appears showing the operator exactly how to place the component, and a new label can print automatically at the station.
The complete solution tells the customer exactly where each component is on the shop floor at any moment, and who completed each operation. The floor now runs at maximum efficiency with little to no cost from misplaced or incorrect components being shipped.
