There are a few technologies that we have been studying and waiting for the right time to jump in. One is logistics robots, another is drones for inventory counting, the last is real time locating.
We have had real time locating for a while with Zebra’s WhereNet products. But we are enhancing that with better software that includes additional technologies for tracking products, including Wi-Fi. Logistics robots are becoming a crowded field, so we will probably need a few lines to have a comprehensive solution.
But all these are becoming technologies that we cannot ignore. Game-changing technologies for our customers that we want to be able to offer. But there is a catch.
We traditionally have not been early adopters. Sell something that is not totally baked once, and you will resist ever letting that happen again. So, what are we looking for before jumping in? Well, for one, vendors that have an established partner program. Offering the ability for technical savvy companies like EMP to be able to not only sell the products, but to be able to integrate them into the customers environment, and to support them for the customer.
That means that the products must be advanced enough that the software is configurable. That the source code does not have to be cracked open for every installation. Work that needs to be done by the manufacturer, and not by a partner. That there are established APIs as part of the system to easily get data in and out of the software.
Finally, the product must be a proven winner, and not a constant headache for the customer.
